My shy friend and me.

November 5, 2012 AprilinParis

These two characters were inspired by a little trip I took on the 82 bus from Neuilly. An adorable kindergarten girl had apparently invited her little friend to come with her and her mother on the bus.
She sat there vivaciously chatting away to her Mom without a care in the world while her friend sat shyly next to her, so meek she could barely raise her eyes. She listened quietly pulling her hair nervously. (It was reminiscent of the cowardly lion’s gesturing of pulling his tail in the film The Wizard of Oz.) I thought she was being so brave because she tried to smile and be polite even though she was obviously very nervous to be away from her own Mom and normal routine.

The drawing just poured out of me spontaneously a couple of days later. I didn’t mean to draw them but when I took a step back I was so happy that my subconcious brought me back to that moment on paper.
It was just a fleeting moment on the bus, it touched my plump little heart deeply.

Adorable! Love the freshness of the drawing! So spontaneous and lively.
Nice story, too! I can imagine the action and the gestures.
